PRP ovarian rejuvenation gives new hope for pregnancy even after menopause
Women nearing or experiencing menopause and struggling with infertility now have the option to use their own eggs to get pregnant
Many women have been told that they can only get pregnant using donor eggs. This is not true anymore. There is now hope for women with low ovarian reserve, poor egg quality, premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), and even early menopause to have babies using their own eggs. The demand for better and more diverse fertility treatments has increased along with the number of women who postpone childbirth until later in life, preferring to wait to start a family until they are established in a successful career. People are also marrying later in life, and so by the time many women are ready to become pregnant, they have begun to experience some type of ovarian insufficiency.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) ovarian rejuvenation is a newly pioneered fertility treatment that takes into account the fact that even post-menopausal women carry up to one thousand dormant eggs within their ovaries. PRP therapy is a cutting-edge treatment that utilizes the body’s own blood to essentially accelerate healing at the injection site and has been utilized for decades for situations such as hair loss, joint injuries, dental treatment, facial rejuvenation, and many others. As it pertains to fertility, the PRP injections are given vaginally directly into the ovaries under the guidance of an ultrasound.
PRP therapy is typically offered alongside the more traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF) and has been shown to improve egg quality and quantity as well as increase the thickness of the uterine lining, thus improving endometrial receptivity and, ultimately, improving the chance of pregnancy. PRP therapy is often used when multiple IVF treatments have failed and has even allowed women who have suffered recurrent implantation failure to become pregnant and experience live birth.
Fertility specialists are promoting PRP therapy because it has succeeded where other treatments fail. One experienced specialist who believes in this treatment is Dr. Zaher Merhi, M.D., a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist. He is also the founder of and medical director of Rejuvenating Fertility Center (RFC), New York’s and Connecticut’s first IVF center to utilize “non-conventional” and holistic/organic fertility methods. Dr. Merhi says: “A lot of doctors give up easily and push their patients towards using donor eggs. While PRP ovarian rejuvenation is still in the experimental phase, it does indeed offer new hope to women who previously would not have been considered candidates for fertility treatments using their own eggs.”
According to Dr Merhi’s published research, PRP therapy works via three different mechanisms:
- It can awaken the dormant eggs within the ovaries, thus increasing egg quantity;
- It can improve egg quality because PRP has high levels of Human Growth Hormones and other Growth Factors that the eggs lack due to the aging process;
- It can stimulate the already existing ovarian stem cells to become “new” young eggs.
In some women, PRP therapy can even restore a previously defunct menstrual cycle, improve libido, and lower hot flashes.
Other women have experienced successful pregnancy after PRP due to this treatment creating a thicker uterine lining, which is more likely to receive the fertilized egg and also to provide more nourishment for the growing embryo. Thus, PRP therapy can, not only allow successful pregnancy, but provide a more nurturing environment for the embryo to grow safely into a healthy baby, helping a lot of women to carry their own baby rather than using a surrogate. This is why PRP is starting to be offered to hopeful mothers who have a thin uterine lining, and who have a history of failed embryo transfers.
Dr. Merhi worked in the fertility field for almost two decades before founding RFC in 2020. His extensive training and faculty appointments include Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, and University of Vermont. Along with his work at RFC, Dr. Merhi is a Professor at SUNY Downstate University and Maimonides Medical Center, and also serves as director of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship program. His American board certifications include OB/GYN, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and High-Complexity Laboratory Director (HCLD). He serves as Chair for high-profile committees such as the NIH, Endocrine Society, American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), New England Fertility Society, and Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI), among others.
This award-winning and internationally recognized fertility expert, lecturer, editor, grant reviewer, and educator has fine-tuned his research skills in the area of ovarian reserve (low AMH or high FSH), ovarian rejuvenation, gentle stimulation IVF (also called mini-IVF), natural IVF, organic IVF, At-Home IVF (through a patented kit), and IVF without injectables. He has studied the latest technology for treatments such as Ozone Sauna therapy, which has the potential to improve egg quality in patients with endometriosis, immune disorders, and PCOS as well as to thicken the uterine lining. Dr. Merhi has been named Top OB/GYN Doctor in 2019 and 2020 and Top Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility specialist by New York Magazine in 2021. He has received several Star Awards from the ASRM. Dr. Merhi has published over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts in high impact journals, and continues to present his new research at conferences around the world.
In addition to his recognition in medical circles, Dr. Merhi and his research have been featured in various articles by major news outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, the New York Post, and others. He has also been featured in popular magazines such as Forbes, Insider, Glamour, Instyle, Parade, Women’s Health, Allure, Romper, POPSUGAR, Hollywood Life, and many more. With all these articles, interviews, conferences, and classes, Dr. Merhi’s primary goal is to continue his research in fertility and continually provide the latest technology to his patients. This is why Dr. Merhi believes in PRP therapy: he has spent years acquiring knowledge, honing his research, and developing the most successful fertility treatments, and he believes that PRP therapy is an exciting new development that will allow previously defeated women to achieve a successful pregnancy and fulfill their dreams of motherhood.
